    img_2116Intent is the elephant in the courtroom of modern justice, beyond forensics and beyond genetics, the need to know what someone was thinking and why they thought it, at such-and-such a time and such-and-such a place. But isn’t this a system doomed to failure? And is it really necessary? Only we European-derived Westerners could invent a term like schadenfreude, delight in the misfortune of others, not so much the passive enjoyment of something such so strange, but that we do it so often that we have a name for it…

    But that is indeed the case, that we are so obsessed with our feelings that our whole system of justice is based upon it, such that if someone is supposedly repentant, then that counts in his favor, whereas without it he is doomed to longer incarceration, as if we could really know the difference, so to make ourselves feel good we reward the best actors, and maybe the most honest are doomed to perdition… (More …)

    “Losers with keyboards?” Did Ash Carter really say that? Wow, such depth of understanding! Is that really his official ‘take’ on the ‘enemy’? Sounds like Trump.  And I suppose he prefers his losers with tanks and aircraft carriers and AK-47’s? He doesn’t have a clue. The American position is worse than I thought. We’re in denial. America doesn’t have a chance in a war with ISIL. And that may be just fine, because…

    1) Gun Control: now that ‘terrorism’ has officially come home to the American nest, there is obviously a silver lining to the clouds on the horizon, i.e. the ease with which a terrorist in America can just walk in a store to buy weapons might just mean a tightening of gun-control measures.     Surely this must be the end of days, when religious fanatics overrun entire sections of the globe—with martyrs, books and fear; opposed by corrupt governments—with lawyers, guns and money; overseen by Empires and umpires—with commentary, updates, and buzzfeed; with the fossils of forgotten ancestors funding it all, sowing seeds of hate where no flowers have grown for years, decades, or centuries; in deserts laid waste by millennia of neglect and eons of misuse.     “You don’t negotiate with them.” “You make them beg.” Words like these, in reference to Palestine in general, and Hamas in particular, were overheard from the mouths of various Israeli leaders, journalists and pundits-at-large following John Kerry’s recent failed attempts to cut a deal, any deal, between Israel and Palestine. They disgust me, so racist and hateful. Israel tried to back away from the comments, but—you know.

    If words like this hurt me so much, I can only imagine what they do to Palestinians. It’s no wonder there is no solution in sight, with such racism and prejudices at work behind the scenes. Imagine the Western horror if Palestinians spoke like that: ‘Muslims are like that; it’s in their blood.’ Religion flowing through capillaries: now there’s an image.

    I’ve been following the Mideast crises for a while now—approximately 2000 years—and it seems to me that the modern version of the quagmire boils down to one irreconcilable issue: Israel’s various leaders demand that Palestinian’s various leaders officially recognize Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state.

    The accent, of course, is on ‘Jewish’ and ‘official’; that is: in writing; that is: in words; that is: kiss ass, something that Palestine is not likely to do in this lifetime or the next, nor should they have to. They’ve already recognized Israel’s right to exist by the way, since 1993. Only now does Netanyahu add the ultimate insult: as a Jewish state. If someone stole my property, which they have, I’d never recognize them as rightful owner, but I’d get on with my life. But I’ll be damned if I’d suffer their insults publicly.     HOLY SHIT 

    Give Israel up, guys, you’re not going to get it back, not that it was ever yours in the first place! The Philistines can take care of themselves; they don’t need Jews or Arabs, six-pointed stars nor Egyptian scarabs. This is not holy war; this is holy shit! Go back to your deserts and count your money, then get on with your lives and count your blessings. Things could be worse. Armenians got it much worse from the same Turks who let Jews back into Palestine in the first place, long after the Romans kicked them out with great ceremony and fireworks. Surrender to your war god of victory and conquest; prostrate yourself to the great black rock of fortitude, Holy of Holies. Take the veils off your wives and get them some make-up. That’ll make it better. If they look less like executioners, then maybe you’ll feel less suicidal.
