Self, Ego, Identity, or the Lack Thereof in Buddhism…

Permanent self and immortal soul are a convenient fiction, but a fiction, nevertheless. And this is what the whole ‘no-self’ on ‘non-self’ debate is all about, or at least WAS. And if it’s disturbing enough that that principle is often misrepresented, it’s downright ridiculous that there is often even a debate over the preference or appropriateness of ‘non-self’ vis a vis ‘no-self.’ But the issue is very clear within the historical context of the competition and ongoing debate between the Brahmanists, Buddhists, and Jains way back some 2500 years ago.

And the reverb echoes even today when George Harrison opines during his last days that these souls go on forever, so death is essentially meaningless. And whatever qualms you might have about such a statement from a scientific viewpoint would hopefully be secondary to the hope and optimism that it might do for you in the short-term of this life span. But it’s very popular now amongst ‘non-dualists’ as much or more than Buddhists to claim that thoughts have no thinker and actions have no doer. They even claim that the Buddha said that, but if so, then I can’t name the sutra, and even if he did it was likely in a metaphorical usage.

Because Buddhism in general is nothing if not mental training, and so to conclude that there is nothing there, nothing at all, would seem counterintuitive. But that is the modern ‘non-dualist’ assertion, that any and all self-identity is detrimental to one’s spiritual well-being. And that may or may not be true, but I don’t think the Buddha said that, because it would render the Eightfold Path pointless. When you believe in yourself, don’t believe too much, just enough to accomplish what you need, not enough to inflate your ego. That’s the Middle Path between excess and lack…

Religion and Identity; Sex and Spirituality; Penises and Breasts…

    036

    Christian church in Ethiopia

Now I have no problem with the LGBTQ community in general and would like to think I could even qualify as the ‘A’ in ‘ally’, not ‘alley’, that sometimes puts the pickle on that little alphabetic sandwich, attached by wooden toothpick and a little smile to last a little while, even though I don’t deliberately seek gays out, though seem to usually have one or two as friends, BUT…

…that doesn’t mean that I buy the entire narrative, especially the ‘born this way’ rap which was once de rigueur back in the days of last-line don’t-attack-the-victim defense, very quaint and old-fashioned charming now that ‘gender fluidity’ is all the rage, and there is increasingly little to be ashamed of in the first place, so no reason to claim DNA as a defense, if there is no offense, and given the lack of any proof of a ‘gay gene’ any more than a ‘basketball gene’ or even a ‘black gene’, really…

…given that pigment genes tend to mix, somehow, much less a ‘backpacker gene’, but what concerns me is the identity with sexuality—any sexuality—in the first place. Is this all we’ve accomplished in the last ten thousand years, to come to blows (no pun) over who gets access to whose genitals, and by what means and for what purpose? I guess so. Strike one for civilization, i.e. city-fication.

We were better off in the wild, where queer was queer, and that was that, no big deal and nothing to fear. Now we’re forced to draw the lines of decency, circling the wagons, dotting ‘I’s and crossing ‘T’s, consulting the prophets and taking a loss.  What a waste of time, and what a loss of dignity, that we’re so busy greasing the wheels (pun) of our lower chakras, that we have no time for the larger questions with the trickier answers, enigmas all wrapped up in riddles and garnished with mysteries left to lightly ferment… (More …)

Bathroom Gender Wars: Wisdom of Sulaiman Needed Urgently…

Am I the only one for whom the current pee-pee and poo-poo gender identity controversy between Amerikan LGBTQA’s and the rest of the un-alphabetized world seems silly and trivial? I mean: does it really matter where we drop our loads and relieve our burdens? Apparently it does. Okay, so I’ve got an idea for a solution—actually two solutions, one for Amerika and one for the rest of the civilized world.

From now on, for most of the civilized world, there will be no more men’s and women’s restrooms. Everybody will pee and poop in a common room, divided by stalls, urinals optional though perhaps discouraged, stalls perhaps extended down closer to the floor to discourage any surreptitious ‘youfies’, with optional chicken-wire over the top (joking). Sound good? No? That’s because you’re Amerikan.

In Amerika everybody will get their own private crapper, public restrooms like chock-a-block tenement rookeries, with locking doors, ultimate privacy, no peek-a-boo freebie holes-in-the-wall and definitely no empty space beneath. Think: handicapped. Yes, we are all handicapped now, aren’t we, reduced in capabilities, divided from ourselves as well as others, by walls and bridges and the need to pee? Welkom in Amerika!
