Religio-Politics 101: Future Chac, the Rain God
The problem with blogging is that it doesn’t pay Jack (he’s my accountant). We do it because we’re driven, by something—or other. Let me explain: I get paid by future archaeologists to try and explain WTF happened. So if you’ve ever watched time-travel movies then you can guess the rest: I leave them clues—in this case my blogs—printed and left in secret locations, so that they can uncover them there in the future and read my narratives on what occurred in the 21st century. Fun fun. So while they’re trying to figure out the past, I’m trying to figure out the future.
The problem is that the paper trail for them ends at the end of the 20th century, about the time when the use of paper itself went into serious decline. So they’ve got all the leftover hardware that we now use, and more that we WILL use (for a little while at least, before the Big Event), but they don’t have the software to get information from it. Oops. So we’ve worked out a little system. It isn’t perfect, but better than nothing. The only problem is that I get paid by the future archeologists in future dollars (FUSD), so it’s not much good for now.
Of course, in all time-travel movies, the big deal is changing the time-line, something you either want, or not, depending on whether the future is good or bad. In this case, it’s not so good. So I write this pseudo-sorta-philosophical blog to try and change things, just a little, to try and make things better in the future. It disturbs me that no one is giving anything like a realistic, much less optimistic, vision of the future. So I try, figuring that religion/philosophy is the back door to fulfillment. But I digress.
There is no sharp line between politics and religion. The two support each other like air and water, the one providing offensive postures, the other providing lines of defense, though the lines of convergence are not always so clear. So even if some of us Westerners question the benefits of democracy then we’ll still likely subscribe to the Christian doctrine of love and passion, especially when the nights are long and the money is short…
And even when some of us Westerners abhor all forms of Christianity as silly and ‘religulous,’ we still likely ‘believe’ in our capitalistic system as God-given and sacrosanct, and uphold profit motive like a prophet’s motive, unquestioned and unquestionable, ‘growth’ tied in with the Big Bang Theory and ever-expanding Uni/Multi-verse…
Tying religion to physics is dangerous, though, or any science which is by definition shifting and theoretical, while religion is all about absolutes, especially dangerous when you hitch your religious wagon to theories as abstract and unknowable to common sense as quantum mechanics and string theory, relativity ‘classical’ by comparison, a picnic of old-school architecture and nomenclature, particles and waves that act like little people with errands to run…
I always learned that a good theory enables accurate—or at least USEFUL—predictions. This is why bogus conspiracy ‘theories’ fall flat, while quantum theory succeeds spectacularly, though it makes little sense, i.e. common sense. But neither does the theory of Evolution predict anything, commonly regarded as one of the most successful theories of all time since it explains so much but predicts absolutely nothing, more like a theory of History than Science, back-filling logic a la conspiracy, body parts selected by Nature ‘because’ of this, or ‘in order’ for that to happen. That’s religion, not Science.
Moral of the story: past and future are for viewing but not knowing. Cause and effect are for reckoning but not witnessing. Metaphors are just that and no more, convenient symbols to show a pathway (‘roadmap’ if you must). Thought and mindfulness predate language and are best renewed and reviewed that way, like deep breathing clearing the lungs. There is no argument between politics or science or mathematics and religion. The Rain God is a God of Peace is a God of Nature is a God of Infinite Knowledge is a God of Everything. Any dispute is only apparent, not real…
